Title: Rejected work #1

This is a tower or totem pole. Entirely made from rejected work, old pieces that Maria van Kesteren kept in her shed for years. Not wanting to throw them away but also having no use for them anymore. I was given a box full of them to make into new work.

Whilst handling the pieces I found a strength and beauty in these works that had been laying on the shelf for many years. They give a wonderful insight in Maria’s archive. They show her traces: drops of paint, little scribles, catches from the gouge and of course wood worms. They also show the great productivity that Maria had. I chose to leave the pieces as they were and use them as historic building blocks. This totem is an ode to rejected work, and of course to the endless form, circle.

Material: wood, nails, (some parts have paint on them)

Size: ca. 150cm high

Year: 2018
